The Purpose of Weeds

Humbled and kneeling,
the weeds teach me tenacity

Ground Elder
A tiny snap of whitened root
left in the soil
will spring again to colonise
and tyrannise the natives.

Buttercup
Innocent golden cups
distract the eye
while underground the feelers dash,
hastening to pop up in all directions.

Rosebay Willowherb
Fool me each year
into believing
they hold a bona fide perennial
season ticket to the border.

Dandelions
The clocks blow time
and downy seeds
settle unwelcoming fissures
of barren, loveless concrete.

And now I stretch my back and wonder
What is the lesson I could learn from wasps?
